Web Marketing: Meta-Post on 18 Online Marketing Techniques

June 16, 2009

Internet Marketing Series

Online Marketing ROIIn July of 2008, I discovered Anita Campbell’s graphic on online marketing ROI, or internet marketing priorities.  SCORE Chicago clients were coming to us, overwhelmed by all the different possibilities.  They asked which were the most important, and which fit their types of businesses.

After seeing Anita’s graphic, I realized I knew about some techniques but not others.  So I set out to explore each on behalf of small business clients of SCORE Chicago.  In the process, I wrote this series of blog posts to provide basic links, further references and sometimes my own experiences.  To make the posts fun, I tried to find YouTube videos as well as text explanations.

It’s taken me ten months to complete these 18 posts.  I’ve now done podcasting, joined voting sites like Stumbleupon and Digg, signed up for affiliate programs.  I’m on Facebook, Twitter, and MySpace.  I’ve learned much more about email marketing, about search engine optimization.

I started out with a rigid format, but gradually changed it to provide meaningful, organized links and annotations.  So, Anita, I’m a bit late but I’m turning in my assignment.

Great post Peg! There are so many possibilities. I hope it helps small business owners understand the need for a budget line-item for online marketing. Yes, it works but you do need resources to work it for profit. Again, thanks for the comprehensive info.

    I love this graphic!

The only flaw I see though, is that I would rank facebook and twitter closer to the holy grail center than pay-per-click ads.

In my experience, organic traffic obtained through good SEO and bona fide word of mouth referrals now being made so easy on facebook and twitter produce more effective conversions than PPC ads. Plus, building a strong following on facebook pages and twitter keeps qualified audiences more in front of your marketing.

    Just my $0.02!

    Interesting!

I feel like there is a scarcity of good marketing today. Good marketing means which can convert the leads into sales. The only marketing that has moved me in the last couple of years is Social Media Optimization.

Thanks for stopping by to share your opinion, Lisa. In fairness to Anita, the graphic was done over a year ago, when Facebook and Twitter were not so prominent in marketing. It would be interesting to see what she would put in the inner circle now.

All those social sites should be in the outer circle, I agree. They’re not that great for promoting anything and especialy not for making money.

Excellent post Faiza. You gave quite good suggestions for blog marketing. These suggestions help you gain pretty good amount of attention from the users. Though the outcomes of the effort are slow, but after a period of substantial wait, you can see a discrete increase in the website traffic due to such ads. Many such websites are provided that allows you to advertise freely. There are many such tweaks and tricks that are genuine, but not popular. Such techniques might certainly help you gain the market attention. . I am a doctor who recently opened a medical website showcasing my clinic over the internet. To step into the internet, I hired a web designing and SEO company named Medical Web Experts (www.medicalwebexperts.com). We had a deal of some keywords for which I need to have my website to be ranked over the top 5 list in google and yahoo. They are working on it. Thought it has taken time as they are working on it to bring a genuine traffic, but a distinguishable increase in traffic is felt slowly and steadily. And that’s the most important thing that I require.

    Hi Peg,
I’m hoping you can help me find some entrepreneurs for an exciting story I’m writing for Crain’s Chicago Business. I’m looking for women entrepreneurs to feature in the Crain’s “Enterprising Women” section on Sept. 21. I’d like to pair up a group of fledgling female entrepreneurs with a group of veteran female entrepreneurs in a similar field. For instance, an up-and-coming entrepreneur in cosmetics would have the chance to get advice from Marilyn Miglin. Or, in interior design or furniture design, I would hook up a newcomer with Holly Hunt. Or a restaurateur-wannabe with Gale Gand. Or an aspiring Hispanic marketing consultant with Dolores Kunda. These are just a few examples. Other fields could include: architecture, retailing, public relations, publishing, fashion design or landscaping. I think it could be great for everyone involved. Let me know if you have anyone that might be interested in participating. Thanks, Monica Ginsburg, 773/935-8232

If there’s another fourth outer circle then I think that’s where social networking sites should be placed. Honestly, in my opinion, they’re not as effective as people think it is.
